How to Make Elderberry Syrup

If your household is starting to feel the end of year fatigue, this is one of the first things I reach for both in clinic and at home. Homemade elderberry syrup is simple, effective, and genuinely something your whole family will actually take.

No long ingredient lists or preseravtives here, just a pot on the stove and about 45 minutes of your time.

What does elderberry syrup actually do?

Elderberries (Sambucus nigra) have been used for centuries to support the immune system and modern research is starting to back up what traditional herbalists have known for a long time. They are rich in anthocyanins and flavonoids, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

As a naturopath I like this remedy because it is food based, gentle enough for toddlers, and something you can make yourself for a fraction of the cost of the bottled version at the health food store.

Homemade elderberry syrup ingredients

  • 1 cup dried elderberries (or 2 cups fresh if you have access to a tree)

  • 3 cups filtered water

  • 1 to 2 tablespoons fresh ginger, grated (optional but worth it)

  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional)

  • 3 to 5 whole cloves (optional)

  • 1 cup raw honey (use maple syrup instead for children under 12 months)

How to make homemade elderberry syrup

  1. Prep. Rinse the elderberries if using fresh. Add the elderberries, water, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves to a medium saucepan.

  2. Simmer. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a low simmer. Cook uncovered for 30 to 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has reduced by about half.

  3. Strain. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly. Strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a bowl, pressing the berries well to get every last drop. Discard the solids.

  4. Add sweetener. Once the liquid is warm but not hot, stir in the raw honey or maple syrup. Do not add honey to boiling liquid as heat destroys its beneficial properties.

  5. Bottle. Pour into a sterilised glass jar or bottle, seal, and store in the fridge.

How much elderberry syrup to give kids

  • Toddlers (1 to 2 years): 1/4 tsp once daily for prevention. Up to 2 or 3 times daily when unwell.

  • Children (3 to 12 years): 1/2 to 1 tsp once daily for prevention. Up to 2 or 3 times daily when unwell.

How long does homemade elderberry syrup last in the fridge?

Refrigerated elderberry syrup lasts 2 to 3 months. I usually make a batch at the start of the cooler months and keep it on hand. Once you have made it once you will wonder why you ever bought the store bought version.
